A little history

Created in 1850 from Limestone County and named for the freestone (sandstone) found in its hills. The Wortham oil boom of the 1920s briefly made Wortham the largest oil-producing town in Texas. The county sits on the southeastern edge of the East Texas Field and remains active in Woodbine leasing.
